چکیده

In this paper we present a new automated, radar based tool for thunderstorms nowcasting called TRT (Thunderstorms Radar Tracking). The goal of this real-time tool is the automated detection, tracking and characterization of intense convective precipitation systems. TRT uses the reflectivity data of the composite image of the Swiss radar network. The algorithm is based on an adaptive thresholding scheme, which allows the detection of convective cells at individual thresholds, depending on their development phase. In this way, thunderstorms can be tracked very early during their growing phase (cells as small as a few 2×2 km pixels) as well as in the mature stage, and trajectories are created from a sequence of radar images. The tracking is based on the method of the geographical overlapping of cells. Splits and merges are also taken into account. TRT forecasts storm movement by extrapolating the motion of individual cells up to 1 h, using the weighted cell displacement velocity. TRT is used as a nowcasting tool in a pre-operational mode at MeteoSwiss since May 2003.

Development and propagation of severe thunderstorms in the Upper Danube catchment area: Towards an integrated nowcasting and forecasting system using real-time data and high-resolution simulations

Quickly developing and fast propagating thunderstorms are an important source of high impact weather (sudden occurrence of high precipitation rates and high wind speed) in central Europe. The region to the north of the Alps is particularly prone to such natural threats. Possibilities how to combine data from routine observations taken by geostationary satellites, a ground based radar network an...

Adaptive Thresholding in Marine RADARs

In order to detect targets upon sea surface or near it, marine radars should be capable of distinguishing signals of target reflections from the sea clutter. Our proposed method in this paper relates to detection of dissimilar marine targets in an inhomogeneous environment with clutter and non-stationary noises, and is based on adaptive thresholding determination methods. The variance and t...

Radar-Based Analysis of Convective Storms over Northwestern Italy

Thunderstorms may cause large damages to infrastructures and population, therefore the possible identification of the areas with the highest occurrence of these events is especially relevant. Nevertheless, few extensive studies of these phenomena with high spatial and temporal resolution have been carried out in the Alps and none of them includes North-western Italy. To analyze thunderstorm eve...

Block-Based Compressive Sensing Using Soft Thresholding of Adaptive Transform Coefficients

Compressive sampling (CS) is a new technique for simultaneous sampling and compression of signals in which the sampling rate can be very small under certain conditions. Due to the limited number of samples, image reconstruction based on CS samples is a challenging task. Most of the existing CS image reconstruction methods have a high computational complexity as they are applied on the entire im...

Description of Nowcasting Algorithm Celltrack and Evaluation of its Performance

CELLTRACK algorithm, that will be described in this contribution is member of category of radar cell-tracking nowcasting algorithms. Meteorological radar measures radar reflectivity, therefore the term reflectivity core is more appropriate instead of the term convective cell. Reflectivity core identification is based on single minimum thresholding of maximum reflectivity data. Wind field from a...
